Transhumanist organizations have been accused of being in the pocket of corporate and military interests. [29] The movement has been identified with Silicon Valley due to the fact that some of its biggest backers, such as Peter Thiel (of PayPal and Bitcoin fame), reside in the region. [30] [31] Some writers see transhumanism as a hive of cranky and obnoxious techno- libertarianism. [32] [33] The fact that Julian Huxley coined the term "transhumanism" and many transhumanists' obsession with constructing a Nietzschean ubermensch known as the "posthuman" has led to comparisons with eugenics. [34] [29] Like eugenics, it has been characterized as a utopian political ideology. [35] Jaron Lanier slammed it as "cybernetic totalism". [36] Some tension has developed between transhumanism and religion, namely Christianity .[ citation needed ] Some transhumanists, generally being atheistic naturalists, see all religion as an impediment to scientific and technological advancement and some Christians oppose transhumanism because of its stance on cloning and genetic engineering and label it as a heretical belief system. [37] Other transhumanists, however, have attempted to extend an olive branch to Christians. [38] Some have tried to reconcile their religion and techno-utopian beliefs, calling for a "scientific theology ." [39] There is even a Mormon transhumanist organization. [40] Ironically for the atheistic transhumanists, the movement has itself been characterized as a religion and its rhetoric compared to Christian apologetics. [41] [42] The very small political transhumanist political movement[ wp ] has gained momentum with Zoltan Istvan[ wp ] announcing his bid for US president, with the Transhumanist Party and other small political parties gaining support internationally. In the air of the great Italian city-republics there was nourished a Strong, self-reliant, secular, myriad-sided life. Just as artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci — partaking of the zeitgeist though not himself a humanist – advocated study of human anatomy, nature, and weather to enrich Renaissance works of art, so Spanish-born humanist Juan Luis Vives (c. 1493–1540) advocated observation, craft, and practical techniques to improve the formal teaching of Aristotelian philosophy at the universities, helping to free them from the grip of Medieval Scholasticism. [35] Thus, the stage was set for the adoption of an approach to natural philosophy, based on empirical observations and experimentation of the physical universe, making possible the advent of the age of scientific inquiry that followed the Renaissance.
